October 2011:
- Starting with this October issue of the Wise Owl, the DRHS students enrolled in Journalism are now not only learning the skill of journalistic writing and layout...they are doing the real-world work of putting together this widely-read community publication! Because of this you will notice great changes. We hope you will not only appreciate the public school news and information shared with you each month, we hope you see the wonderfully unique academic opportunity our students are being offered.

Your cooperation with this health and safety measure would be greatly appreciated.

- The Dell Rapids Quarriers boys sophomore basketball team traveled to Sioux Valley High School on Saturday, January 28 to participate in a six-team tournament that included teams from Madison, Sioux Valley, Deubrook, Elkton-Lake Benton, and Clark Willow Lake. ELKTON LAKE BENTON: The pool play format opened with Dell Rapids taking on Elkton Lake Benton. Cody Nielsen got the Quarriers off on the right foot as he scored 10 points, grabbed six rebounds, and picked up a pair of steals in leading them to a 28-23 victory. Tanner Solberg chipped in with eight points and a blocked shot, while Alec Riswold scored five points and had two steals. SIOUX VALLEY: In a hard fought second game, the young Quarriers could not overcome an early first half deficit and fell to the Cossacks by a score of 31-38. Full court pressure by Sioux Valley created a number of steals that they turned into easy scoring opportunities. Cody Nielsen turned in another nice game as he scored 11 points, pulled down seven rebounds, had a pair of steals, and a pair of assists. Zach Schroeder, Zane Schumacher, and Tanner Solberg each scored five points with Schumacher and Solberg each grabbing four rebounds. DEUBROOK: Playing for third place in their final game, Dell Rapids was matched against the Deubrook Dolphins. The Quarriers showed a lot of heart in this final game despite not having any break between the three games they played. Leading Deubrook throughout the contest, the defensive tandem of Cody Nielsen and Zach Schroeder held the Dolphins leading scorer to only three second half points. However it was a well defended three point shot by Deubrook with seconds remaining that tied the game and sent it into overtime. The tournaments sudden death overtime play meant the first team to score a two or three point basket would be the winner. Beginning with a jump ball that Cody Nielsen controlled, it took three Quarrier passes to find Kahler Berven posting up inside. Upon receiving the ball, the little guard pump faked the two taller defenders before going up and scoring two points that gave Dell Rapids a 29-27 win, and third place honors. For the game, Berven lead all scorers with 10 points while picking up three steals. Alec Riswold came up big as he scored eight points and pulled down 7 rebounds. - The Dell Rapids Quarriers boys junior varsity basketball team traveled to Vermillion on Thursday, January 26 to take on the Tanagers. The hosts had no answer in slowing down the Quarrier attack on either end of the floor as the Quarriers left town with a huge 50 - 23 win. While using full court trapping pressure to produce a number of turnovers that Dell Rapids turned into easy scoring opportunities, their stingy defense allowed Vermillion only seven second half points. When not converting turnovers into layups, the Quarriers used a patient motion offense to pick up their ninth win of the season. Zach White had a big night as he lead the young Quarriers with 16 points and pulled down 7 rebounds. Matt Kolbeck scored nine points and grabbed seven rebounds as well. Lane LeBrun had a nice game at the point guard position as he scored seven points and handed out four assists. Michael McGee and Jacob Morris each chipped in with five points.
