JV BOYS POST ANOTHER WIN
The Dell Rapids Quarriers boys junior varsity basketball team hosted Big Sioux Conference foe the Tri-Valley Mustangs on Friday, February 3 and claimed a hard fought 25 - 19 victory. The low scoring contest was a result of both teams turning in tremendous defensive efforts. As a result, the leading scorer in the game was Dell Rapids Matt Kolbeck with seven points. Kolbeck also pulled down a team high six rebounds. Cody Nielsen came off the bench to contribute six points and some solid defensive play on the inside. Lane LeBrun picked up three steals and handed out three assists. The teams next game will be Friday, February 10, when they travel south to take on another Big Sioux Conference opponent, the Dakota Valley Panthers.
LADY Q'S LOSE LEAD, LOSE GAME
TRI-VALLEY 53, DELL RAPIDS 42 in Dell Rapids – Allison Cross scored 15 points, Nicole Fritz had 12 and Sammy Kasowski added 11 for the Mustangs. Dell Rapids jumped out to a 17-6 lead in the first quarter, but scored just 25 points the rest of the game. For Dell Rapids, Brianna Davis scored 15 points. Dell Rapids (11-5) hosts McCook Central/Montrose on Thursday.

CARDINAL BOYS LOSE ON THE ROAD
DEUBROOK 79, DELL RAPIDS ST. MARY 32 in Toronto – The Dolphins (12-3) held DRSM scoreless (16-0) in the first quarter and outscored the Cardinals 28-6 in the third for the lopsided win. Tyler Murphy was the only Deubrook player in double figures with 19 points and Trever Petersen added six assists. For DRSM Jason Michel had 10 points and 10 rebounds. DRSM hosts Estelline next Friday.
LEE SIGNS LETTER OF INTENT
Chris Lee of Dell Rapids St. Mary has signed a letter of intent to continue his football career at Minnesota State-Moorhead. Lee was an All State player for the Cardinals. Moorhead is a Divison II school that plays in the Northern Sun Conference. That is the same conference as Augustana, the University of Sioux Falls, Northern State, and Southwest Minnesota State. DELL RAPIDS 79, CANTON 43 in Canton - Cole Langer’s triple-double of 23 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists sparked the top-ranked Class A Quarriers. Michael Schmidt had 13 points and nine rebounds, Bryce Koch 11 points and 10 rebounds and Colin Karst 10 rebounds. For Canton, Jay Lems had 16 points and Zach DeJong 13. Cody Willett had 10 rebounds. BRIDGEWATER — Bridgewater-Emery’s Justine Dye had 19 points and 11 rebounds in a 45-44 win over Dell Rapids St. Mary Monday night. Bridgewater-Emery’s Elizabeth Schnabel had nine rebounds. The Huskies shot 18-of-59 from the field, 7-of-16 from the line and had 16 turnovers. DRSM’s Kelly Michel had 16 points and eight rebounds. DRSM shot 13-of-58 from the field, 17-of-29 from the line and had 18 turnovers. Bridgewater-Emery (6-9) plays at Mount Vernon today, while DRSM is 4-11. DRSM won the JV 39-23.
DAVIS HITS GAME WINNER
Brianna Davis hit a three point basket just ahead of the final buzzer as Dell Rapids beat Pipestone 39-37 Saturday night. Davis had 13 points in the game and Hailey Fiedler scored 12. The Lady Q's are now 11-3 on the year. The next game will be in Canton on Tuesday. The Dell Rapids Lady Quarriers JV girls basketball team suffered their first lost of the season to Pipestone Area Saturday, January 28. The girls lost a tough, physical battle 22-19. Karen Eddy hit some big shots, but it was not enough as Pipestone's physical play kept the girls off-balance all night.

BARBERS CHOOSE COLLEGE
Channing and Zachary Barber, who helped lead the Quarriers to state footbal titles in 2010 and 2011, will continue their football careers at Northern State University in Aberdeen. Both were all-state players in Class 11A, and each won the Joe Robbie Most Valuable Player award in the championship in Vermillion. The Barbers will sign their letter of intent to make the decision final the first week of February.

In what could be a preview for this year’s Class A boys state basketball championship, No. 2 Dell Rapids handed top-ranked St. Thomas More its first loss against a South Dakota oppenent this season with a 58-47 win Saturday at the Hanson Classic in Mitchell. Bryce Koch led the Quarriers (10-2) with 17 points while Cole Langer added 16 and Michael Schmidt 13. Dell Rapids outscored the Cavaliers 36-27 in the second half and held STM to just three points in the second quarter. Logan Wray scored 15 of his game-high 25 points in the fourth quarter as the Madison boys basketball team held off second-ranked Class A Dell Rapids 67-64 Thursday in Dell Rapids. Tyler Wiebe added 11 points and nine rebounds while Jacob Giles had 11 points and Mason Sullivan 10 points for the Bulldogs (7-2), who trailed 34-28 at halftime and led 42-41 after three quarters. The Dell Rapids Quarriers boys junior varsity basketball team hosted the Madison Bulldogs Thursday, January 19 and fell victim to a ferocious 'Dog attack in losing by a score of 23-41. The young Quarriers were unable to generate any consistent play during the contest outside of the final four minutes of the second quarter when some nice defense and patient offense cut the Madison lead to eight. That would be as close as Dell Rapids would get as they could only score three points in the third quarter. Leading scorers for the Quarriers were Lane LeBrun, Jacob Morris, and Matt Kolbeck who each scored five points. Morris pulled down a team high six rebounds. The Dell Rapids JV team's record now stands at 8 wins and 3 losses.

The Dell Rapids Lady Quarriers "C" team lost a close 40-35 contest with Lincoln high school in Sioux Falls on Monday, January 16. Jordan Stone led the scoring with 11 points. Sara Haak scored 8 and managed the offense under an aggressive Patriot defense. This was the girls first experience with the 35-second shot clock used by AA schools, and they adapted well to the pace of play.

HENRIKSEN WINS AWARD
Mike Henriksen of Dell Rapids has been named the South Dakota Sportscaster of the Year in voting by the state members of the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association. Terry Vandrovec of the Sioux Falls Argus Leaderwas named Sportswriter of the Year. Henriksen has been a sportscaster for over 30 years. He co-hosts a daily hour long sports talk show, "Calling All Sports" with Mark Ovenden of KDLT that airs on 8 stations, and hosts "Sportsmax", a weekly sports interview show that airs on 15 stations. He has also been involved in state tournament coverage for South Dakota Public Broadcasting for 11 years. Mike also does play by play on webcasts for Dell Rapids games, as well as various radio stations.
QUARRIERS SUFFER FIRST LOSS
The Sioux Falls Christian’s boys basketball team defeated second-ranked Class A Dell Rapids 62-57 in the championship game of the Big Sioux Conference tournament Saturday at SFC, handing the Quarriers their first loss. Jordan Baker scored 19 points, Cody Van Holland 17 and Brett Rozenboom 12 for SFC, which led 30-27 at halftime. The game was tied with two minutes to play. For DR, Bryce Koch had 13 points and 13 rebounds. Cole Langer and Michael Schmidt each had 12 points and Channing Barber had 11. The teams will play again on Tuesday at Dell Rapids. The game will be webcast.

ELK POINT — The Elk Point-Jefferson Huskies were unable to hold onto the six-point lead they held with two minutes left in the game. The Dell Rapids Quarriers fought back and tied the game in regulation, then went on to win in overtime, 52-49, in the first round of the Big Sioux Conference Boys’ Basketball Tournament on Thursday.
Bryce Koch led the Quarriers with 15 points and 13 rebounds, and Riley Rinehart had 10 points. EP-J was led by Blake Donnelly’s 16 points and seven rebounds, while Mike Wurtz scored 16 as well. Dell Rapids will face Tri-Valley in the semifinals in Elk Point.

QUARRIERS HOST, WIN JV BOYS TOURNEY
The Dell Rapids Public High School gym was the sight of the first annual boys Junior Varsity basketball tournament held on Saturday, December 29. With JV teams from Luverne, Beresford, Dakota Valley, Deubrook, and Sioux Falls Roosevelt competing in pool play, it was the host team, Dell Rapids Quarriers, that came away as tournament champions.
In the opening round game against the Luverne Cardinals, Zach White lead the scoring for Dell Rapids with 9 points, including a steal and breakaway dunk that helped spark the team to its 37-27 victory. Jacob Morris scored 8 points and Matt Kolbeck six. Kolbeck also pulled down a team high eight rebounds. Michael McGee picked up three steals and three rebounds while Colin LeBrun grabbed four rebounds.
In the second round game against the Dakota Valley Panthers, the young Quarriers found themselves in a real cat fight through three quarters of play before their pressure defense finally wore out the Panthers attack. Matt Kolbeck lead Dell Rapids to the 51-42 win with 11 points while Jacob Morris scored ten. Zach White pulled down five rebounds with Kolbeck and Spencer Kerzman each grabbing three. Lane LeBrun dished out three assists.
In the Championship game, the Quarriers again relied on their four quarters of pressure defense along with some timely shooting to defeat the Sioux Falls Roosevelt Rough Riders by a score of 51-33. Matt Kolbeck again came up big for the hosts on both ends of the floor as he scored 16 points and pulled down 9 rebounds. Michael McGee came off the bench to score 10 points, making all four shots he took. Jacob Morris added six points, included a long three point shot at the end of the second quarter that gave Dell Rapids the lead they would not give up for the remainder of the game. Spencer Kerzman chipped in with five points, Nathan Koens and Kahler Berven added four points each. Koens also pulled down 4 rebounds with Lane LeBrun picking up three steals and a pair of assists.

ELKTON LAKE BENTON: The pool play format opened with Dell Rapids taking on Elkton Lake Benton. Cody Nielsen got the Quarriers off on the right foot as he scored 10 points, grabbed six rebounds, and picked up a pair of steals in leading them to a 28-23 victory. Tanner Solberg chipped in with eight points and a blocked shot, while Alec Riswold scored five points and had two steals.
SIOUX VALLEY: In a hard fought second game, the young Quarriers could not overcome an early first half deficit and fell to the Cossacks by a score of 31-38. Full court pressure by Sioux Valley created a number of steals that they turned into easy scoring opportunities. Cody Nielsen turned in another nice game as he scored 11 points, pulled down seven rebounds, had a pair of steals, and a pair of assists. Zach Schroeder, Zane Schumacher, and Tanner Solberg each scored five points with Schumacher and Solberg each grabbing four rebounds.
DEUBROOK: Playing for third place in their final game, Dell Rapids was matched against the Deubrook Dolphins. The Quarriers showed a lot of heart in this final game despite not having any break between the three games they played. Leading Deubrook throughout the contest, the defensive tandem of Cody Nielsen and Zach Schroeder held the Dolphins leading scorer to only three second half points. However it was a well defended three point shot by Deubrook with seconds remaining that tied the game and sent it into overtime. The tournaments sudden death overtime play meant the first team to score a two or three point basket would be the winner. Beginning with a jump ball that Cody Nielsen controlled, it took three Quarrier passes to find Kahler Berven posting up inside. Upon receiving the ball, the little guard pump faked the two taller defenders before going up and scoring two points that gave Dell Rapids a 29-27 win, and third place honors. For the game, Berven lead all scorers with 10 points while picking up three steals. Alec Riswold came up big as he scored eight points and pulled down 7 rebounds. Nielsen lead the team in rebounds with eight and scored four points. Brett Nichols scored four points, had a pair of steals and a pair of assists.
Tatum Larson and Katelyn Short each scored 12 points as Canton edged Dell Rapids 54-52 in double overtime in Thursday’s first round of the girls Big Sioux Conference tournament in Dell Rapids. Atlanta Lundstrom added eight rebounds and Kristin Twedt seven for the C-Hawks (5-2). For Dell Rapids (6-2), Paige Bunkers had 18 points and Haley Fiedler had 12 points and seven rebounds. Next: Canton plays Beresford tonight at 6 p.m., while Dell Rapids plays Sioux Falls Christian at 7:30. Both games are in Dell Rapids.
DELL RAPIDS 42, ELK POINT-JEFFERSON 30 in Elk Point – Amanda Mergen had 12 points and Brianna Davis 10 for the Quarriers (4-1), who trailed 16-14 at halftime. For EPJ (1-4), Keely Bertram had 19 points. Next: Dell Rapids plays in the Parkston Classic on Thursday.
The Dell Rapids Lady Quarriers "C" Team improved to 3-2 on the season with a 29-25 win over Elk Point-Jefferson on December 22. Jordan Stone and Brittney Siemonsma led the attack with 10 points each, Jordan's in two quarters of work.
CANISTOTA 67, DELL RAPIDS ST. MARY 41 in Canistota – Alex Robertson paced the fourth-ranked Class B Hawks with 15 points, six steals and seven assists. Boone DeKramer added 13 points, Tyler Decker 11 and Jason Van Winkle 10 points and 11 rebounds. Canistota (5-0) led 31-16 at halftime. For DRSM (0-6), Jason Michel had 18 points and nine rebounds and Cody Gannon 12 points. Next: Canistota visits Mitchell Christian on Jan. 3. DRSM plays Arlington on Dec. 31.
DELL RAPIDS 75, ELK POINT-JEFFERSON 50 in Elk Point – Cole Langer had 19 points and Bryce Koch 18 to lead the No. 2 Class A Quarriers. Michael Schmidt added eight rebounds. Dell Rapids (4-0), which shot 62 percent from the field, led 33-23 at halftime. For EPJ (1-2), Mike Wurtz had nine points. Next: Dell Rapids plays Hamlin on Dec. 31. GARRETSON 84, DELL RAPIDS ST. MARY 36 in Garretson – Sawyer Gibson scored 30 points, grabbed eight rebounds and had six steals to lead the Blue Dragons. Dustin Steckler added 12 points and 11 assists and Matt Duerr scored 10. Garretson led 46-23 at halftime. For DRSM, Cody Gannon had 14 points and Jason Michel added 11. DRSM (0-5) visits Canistota on Thursday. DELL RAPIDS 49, GARRETSON 34 in Garretson - The Quarriers outscored Garretson 25-9 in the second half. Brianna Davis scored 18 points for Dell Rapids (3-1). Hailey Fiedler had 9 rebounds. Dells will next play at Elk Point/Jefferson on Thursday. GIRLS C TEAM RESULTS- The Lady Quarriers "C" team finished 1-2 at the Tri-Valley Tournament on Saturday, December 17. The girls got off to a slow start in the first game against Beresford, losing 33-17. Jordan Stone let the way with 7 points. Brittney Siemonsma exploded for 18 points in the second game drubbing of Deubrook. Jordan added 8 in the 35-17 win. In the final game, the host team edged out a close 31-27 win. Sara Haak had 7 points, and Jordan 8.

COLMAN-EGAN 47, DELL RAPIDS ST. MARY 31 in Dell Rapids – Nick Sweeney scored 20 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for the Hawks. Riley Clark and Keaton Westover each added 11 points and Clark pulled down 10 rebounds. C-E led 22-16 at halftime. For DRSM, Cody Gannon scored 11 points and Jason Michel pulled down eight rebounds. MARY 40 in Dell Rapids – Terry Weber had a game-high 18 points and eight rebounds for BE (1-1), while Steven Whistler added 14 points and eight rebounds, Jacob Schweitzer 12 points and Seth Wethor five assists. For DRSM (0-1), which trailed 21-5 after the first quarter, Jason Michel and Cody Gannon each had 12 points. St. Mary hosts Centerville Tuesday, and the game will be webcast DELL RAPIDS QUARRIERS BOYS JV BASKETBALL TEAM DEFEATS WEST CENTRAL, 42-25 The Dell Rapids Quarriers boys junior varsity basketball team opened the 2011-12 season by hosting the West Central Trojans on Friday, December 9. Playing even for three quarters, the Quarriers allowed the Trojans only 2 points in the fourth quarter while scoring 17 points of their own to secure the victory. Jacob Morris and Zach White lead all scorers with 8 points apiece with White grabbing six rebounds. Lane LeBrun added four points to go with a team high eight rebounds. Daniel Konieczny, an exchange student from Denmark, added six points. Spencer Kerzman scored five points, while Nathan Koens had four steals in the win. ST MARY GIRLS GET WIN, PUB FALLS DELL RAPIDS ST. MARY 50, COLMAN-EGAN 42 - Kelly Michel scored 24 points for the Cardinals. DRSM led 22-14 at halftime and the game was tied 28-28 after three quarters. For CE, Tori Nelsen had 17 points and eight rebounds, and Paityn Groos had 10 rebounds. ELKTON-LAKE BENTON 64, DELL RAPIDS 36 – Megan Krogman scored 16 points with 10 free throws and 14 rebounds to lead Elkton. Cassidy Gebhart added 15 points. For DR, Brianna Davis had nine points. PUB BOYS OPEN WITH WIN Bryce Koch had 22 points and 12 rebounds to lead Dell Rapids to a 64-49 win over West Central Friday night in Dell Rapids. Michael Schmidt had 11 points and Cole Langer 10. DRSM will host Bridgewater-Emery on Monday night. LADY Q'S WIN SEASON OPENER Brianna Davis scored 14 points and Paige Bunkers 10 to lead Dell Rapids, which was ahead 24-15 at the half. ST MARY FALLS Garretson outscored Dell Rapids St. Mary 15-5 in overtime to open the girls basketball season with a 68-58 win Tuesday in Dell Rapids. Sydney Gibson led the BLue Dragons with 26 points and six rebounds while Haley Edmundson added 15 points and Stephanie Brinkman 11 points. For DRSM, Kelly Michel had 22 points and 12 rebounds. C TEAM GETS WIN The Lady Quarrier's C Team started the basketball season with a win over Sioux Falls Christian, 21-15. The girls were down by 5 at the half, but outscored the Chargers 15-4 in the 4th quarter during a ferocious comeback. Brittney Siemonsma and Jordan Stone led the scoring with 8 and 5 points. Sarah Haak had good control of the backcourt, while Jill Nelsen made a strong contribution off the bench. BASKETBALL WEBCAST SCHEDULE The initial schedule for video webcasts for the upcoming basketball season has been announced. The first games will be a doubleheader on December 13th as the St. Mary boys and girls host Centerville. Later that week, another doubleheader will be featured as Dells Pub hosts Tea on the 16th. Other highlights include the Cardinal and Quarrier boys taking part in the Entringer Classic in Brookings on December 31st, the Quarrier boys in the Hanson Classic, and several other St. Mary and Pub boys and girls games. The complete list of games will be posted once all of the details are worked out for more road games. Some games may be audio only due to some schools restrictions of video access and web availability. DELLS HOSTS "TOP OF THE ROCK" The Dell Rapids Quarriers hosted the 8 team "Top of the Rock" tourney to open the wrestling season Saturday. Place winners for Dell Rapids included 2nd place for Tyler Gee at 152 pounds, 3rd place finishes for Scott Warwick at 106, Lathan Gorospe at 120, Jordan Lindberg at 132, Philip Schwebach at 145, and Jackson Entringer at 170, and 4th place finishes for Chad Munk at 195 and David Halverson at 285. The Quarrier finished 3rd in the team competition. Tri-Valley won the meet with 200 points. Adrian, MN, was second with 180.
